So why not make use of this amazing ability to adapt and absorb to work for their own advantage- especially in the long run by helping them acquire essential life skills.
Life skills include a wide range of activities from being able to dress up by, use personal hygiene, keeping own things im order and keeping the surroundings tidy to fixing a snack for oneself.
For starters, this may seem a little daunting or taxing for a young child but we must never underestimate a child's capability to learn.
This first rule is to introduce one thing at a time and take things one tiny little step at a time. At first the child may not be able to dress up all by himself but may start off by taking off his clothes and may button up his/ her own shirt/ coat etc. Acknowledge this as an achievement of the child and encourage and appreciate accordingly. Remember, do not rush the child. This may delay the acquisition process of a skill.
SENSE OF RESPONSIBILITY:
When a child becomes aware of the fact that he is not just capable of doing things for himself but in fact is responsible for doing them his cognitive ability improves. He becomes mindful of these actions, practices them regularly producing four beneficial results:
- He practices them hence acquiring mastery in these skills
3. New neural pathways develop in his brain leading to brain development and cognitive enhancements.
4. He learns to adapt to the world around him
Thus, introduction of life skills early during a child's life is a steady step towards making him a responsible citizen in the future in addition to teaching him essential skills useful for the rest of his life!
